Baseline activity is an activity done regularly. It’s something that you do for a large part of your life, many times every day. Even if it doesn’t take up much of your time, it should still be done as a more or less universal aspect of who you are and how you function in society.
An example of a baseline activity would be eating breakfast each morning. When we eat food to fuel our bodies, we are engaged in baseline activity.
We probably don’t need to exercise after breakfast because our bodies have just been fueling themselves with food; exercise is the type we do to improve our condition and feel better about ourselves, not because we need food or even want it.
Eating breakfast is not for these reasons; it is just an act that sustains and maintains our bodies in their normal state.
Health-Enhancing Activities
On the other hand, health-enhancing activities are things that you only do a couple of times a year or less often. You don’t do them all the time like baseline activities.
You don’t even do them because you want or need them to function normally; you do them to take your body beyond normal functioning into heightened health and wellness states.
An example of a health-enhancing activity would be going to the gym after work and lifting weights. It’s something that you do because you want to improve your state of health.
If you don’t go to the gym, your body won’t fall apart, but you’ll feel less satisfied with what it’s capable of doing and look forward to the next time you can go.
Some Baseline Activities
Walking
Walking is an efficient method to get your steps in a while and get some fresh air, whether you’re at work, school, or simply running errands around town.
Using the stairs
While utilizing the elevator may be more convenient, including stairwells in your route helps tone muscles that are rarely used during routine work.
Exercises at Home
Many people spend most of their workday seated — whether it’s on a computer or in meetings/consulting with customers. Rather than sitting for hours on end, use this opportunity to get in some ab workouts!
Family walks
Running will be much more pleasurable for everyone if you have a dog! However, if there are no four-legged pals around, going for a walk with your family is an excellent opportunity to spend quality time together while improving your health.
Sports
Participating in sports keeps children active, which is a positive thing. Additionally, it keeps children moving outside rather than inside, playing computer games or looking at screens all day.
